Russia reports 613 drones targeting Moscow

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defence forces intercepted most of the drones before they reached the city, including 231 destroyed as they approached Moscow.

“In the period from 20:30 on October 28 to 07:00 on October 29, 613 UAVs flew towards the Moscow region” Sobyanin said.

He added that most of the drones had been neutralised at a distance, while 231 were destroyed on their approach to the capital.

The reported attack is the latest in a series of major drone assaults targeting the Moscow region. Russian air defence forces reported shooting down more than 1,600 drones during a large-scale attack in September.

The overnight incident also disrupted air travel, with temporary restrictions imposed at Moscow-area airports, including Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky, according to Russian media reports.

The restrictions affected flights as authorities responded to the reported drone threat. The extent of any damage or casualties resulting from Thursday’s attack was not immediately clear.

Meanwhile, Russian forces attacked Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, overnight, damaging an educational institution, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

The latest attack highlights the growing role on long range drones in the Russia-Ukraine war with strikes and attempted interceptions increasingly affecting areas far from the battlefield.
