Kagame in Antigua and Barbuda for Commonwealth summit

Kagame arrived in the Caribbean nation on Sunday afternoon for the summit, which runs from November 1 to 4, 2026, under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth.”

According to a statement from the Office of the President, Kagame later joined fellow Commonwealth Heads of State and Government and invited dignitaries for a ceremonial parade marking the 45th anniversary of Antigua and Barbuda’s independence.

The summit, hosted by Prime Minister Gaston Browne, is expected to focus on strengthening economic cooperation, expanding trade and investment, addressing climate change and advancing sustainable development across member countries.

Discussions will also explore opportunities to increase investment in infrastructure, technology, renewable energy and the blue economy, alongside efforts to improve access to finance and build economic resilience, particularly for vulnerable island nations.

Other priorities include digital transformation, job creation, youth empowerment and cooperation on global governance challenges.

The meeting brings together Heads of Government, senior government officials, business leaders and representatives of youth and civil society organisations from across the Commonwealth.

The gathering is also an opportunity for member countries to strengthen partnerships and explore ways of translating shared commitments into practical economic and development gains.

Rwanda previously hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kigali in June 2022, under the theme “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming.”

The 2022 meeting brought together leaders and representatives from across the Commonwealth and saw Rwanda assume the role of Chair-in-Office, which it held until the 2024 summit in Samoa.

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 56 independent countries spanning Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe and the Pacific. Its members cooperate on issues including economic development, democracy, climate action and international relations.
