The victory at Salle Polyvalente in Abidjan secured Rwanda’s place in the knockout stage after they finished second in Group A with four points.
Rwanda entered the match needing a win after losing 36-20 to Guinea in their opening game before bouncing back with a 30-25 victory over hosts Côte d’Ivoire.
Coach Hafedh Zouabi’s side dominated Zimbabwe from the outset, taking an 18-5 lead into half-time before completing a 32-16 victory.
Guinea topped Group A with six points after beating Côte d’Ivoire 32-14 in the other group match.
Rwanda will face Angola in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, September 9, with the match scheduled for 2 p.m. Kigali time.
It will be Rwanda’s third appearance at the Africa U-20 Handball Championship.
Rwanda first competed in the tournament in 2022 when they hosted the championship in Kigali and finished eighth. They returned in 2024, finishing sixth in the edition held in Tunisia.
