A total of 395,083 people have been vaccinated since Rwanda began countrywide inoculation programme on 5th March 2021.
Coronavirus symptoms include coughing, flu, and difficulty in breathing. The virus is said to be transmitted through the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract.
Rwandans are urged to adhere to COVID-19 health guidelines, washing hands frequently using soaps and safe water, wearing face masks and respecting social distancing.
At least 52 people had converged at the home of one Antoine Bavakure located in Kirabyo Village, Gahinga Cell of Mururu Sector, where they were found worshipping.
Other 20 worshipers were arrested at the home of Simon Bwanakweri, 61, located in Murinzi Village, Cyendajuru Cell of Giheke Sector.
The Western region Police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Twizere Karekezi said that all the violators are members of Pentecostal Church.
“Area residents reported two homes, which had been turned into churches with many people gathered there worshipping.
Police and local leaders conducted the operations in Mururu and Giheke sectors where the 72 violators were found congested in small rooms without facemasks, no hand-washing facilities and no social distancing,” said CIP Karekezi.
Bavakure is a grassroots leader in Kirabyo Village and it is not the first time he has been implicated in similar violations.
CIP Karekezi reminded the public that the cases of Covid-19 continue rising, which requires maximum compliance with the government prevention directives and collective responsibility to report errant violators.
“Religious services are only allowed in churches permitted to resume hosting worshippers at 30% of the total occupancy and adhering to health measures. overcrowding in such small rooms is exposing your life to risks of infection and spread of Covid-19 pandemic,” said the spokesperson.
He commended the public for their role in community policing through sharing information and urged them to keep up the spirit.
All violators were educated on health measures and handed administrative fines.
He made the revelation on Saturday appearing in a talk show ‘Urubuga rw’Itangazamakuru’ translated as ‘media platform’ aired on Isango Star.

As new infections decreased, the country lifted some restrictions allowing wedding receptions and reopening of other activities.
On 7th June, Rwanda experienced a wave of new infections hitting 62 in one day and subsequently increased to 127 on 11th June and 622 on 21st June 2021.

Appearing in the talk show, Dr. Mpunga attributed the surge in new infections to complacency and the existence of Delta variant.
“We have approximately 15,000 COVID-19 patients of whom 90% are receiving treatment under the home-based care. A total of 350 patients are admitted at COVID-19 treatment centers including 180 who are on ventilators,” he said.
Dr. Mpunga warned the public against complacency considering the fact that the new Delta variant of COVID-19 spreads faster.
“It should be everyone’s responsibility to comply with instituted COVID-19 containment measures because the pandemic cannot be defeated if people don’t own the fight,” he stated.
The Spokesperson of Rwanda National Police (RNP), CP John Bosco Kabera also highlighted that the spike in new cases reflects public’s complacency against preventive directives.
He explained that over 100,000 people were caught violating preventive measures in the past ten days.
“These include people violating measures in many ways where some of them were not wearing face masks, didn’t respect social distancing and violated curfew hours,” he said.
“There are over 4000 people caught in hidden bars, over 2000 were caught holding parties at home. We also impounded 1000 vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles violating curfew hours,” added CP Kabera.
He warned people against violating preventive directives and urged them to support national efforts to defeat the pandemic.

The executive secretary for Busasamana sector, Egide Bizimana reminded the violators that the Cabinet measures are meant to save them from the pandemic and should be viewed as their lifeline.
“The government measures are there to guide us to save our lives. Such violations are the cause of the rise in Covid-19 cases and related deaths.
If you engage in such risky prohibited practices or see them and fail to report, you are derailing the national efforts to contain the virus and to save lives,” Bizimana said.
The statement released last night shows that 887 people have caught the virus while 946 recovered.

The campaign will also encourage the public to adhere to all COVID-19 preventive measures, as guided by the Ministry of Health.
Commenting on the partnership during the virtual launch event , Mitwa Ng’ambi, MTN Rwanda Chief Executive Officer said: “Around the world, the fight against COVID-19 wages on and our only defence is strict adherence to the COVID-19 preventive measures as guided by our Ministry of Health. As MTN Rwanda, we thank the Ministry and all stakeholders for their efforts in the fight against COVID-19. We would also like to lend our voice once again, in support of these ongoing efforts to reemphasize the importance of wearing masks correctly and safely, as well as the need to adhere to all other preventive measures.”
In addition, MTN Rwanda announced a contribution of 20,000 face masks and 500 Oxygen saturation monitors as further support towards the ongoing public health needs. MTN Rwanda has also taken a step further to support 40 SMEs that are running e-commerce businesses by zero-rating access to their websites for MTN customers and granting them 3 months-FREE access to MoMo Biz (a digital platform that enables businesses to easily conduct end-to-end MoMo transactions).
Dr. Albert Tuyishime, Head of HIV/AIDS, Diseases Prevention and Control Department (HDPC) Rwanda Biomedical Center in attendance of the virtual event commended MTN Rwanda’s contributions.
“This initiative also stands as a plea to the general public to wear their masks properly in order to flatten the curve. COVID-19 has been proved to be transmissible through the air especially in confined areas, crowed and close-setting places. Currently, we are dealing with a more aggressive strain of the virus (looking at the clinical symptoms, severity and transmission rate), therefore by wearing that mask in the proper way, you save your life, the lives of your loved ones and your community at large. We can only truly defeat this pandemic by our combined efforts,” he noted.
Among others, MTN Rwanda will be offering its communication channels to the Ministry of Health and Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) to disseminate important messages to the public on COVID-19 preventive measures.
“Partnering with MTN to communicate our messages will provide the extra push we need to broadcast the essence of not letting our guard down, we haven’t beaten COVID-19 just yet,” added Dr. Tuyishime.
The One More Push campaign will run for four (4) months and will be present on radio, TV, outdoor and digital media channels.
“The ‘One More Push’ campaign is a call-to action for all of us. What might seem as a slight change in behaviour by wearing masks properly, social distancing and washing hands regularly, is the daily inch needed to take us a step closer to winning this battle against COVID-19,” concluded Ng’ambi.
