233 convicted of genocide ideology from 2011 to 2014

A survey carried by the National Commission for the Fight Against Genocide (CNLG) indicated that 223 people were found guilty of genocide ideology between 2011 and 2014.

The 2014 prosecution report shows that courts had received 303 files of genocide ideology suspects.

The survey carried out by CNLG aims at gauging the rate of genocide ideology in the country since 1995 till 2015. The survey has a sample size of 180 people asking five citizens and one leader from every district of the country.

As the survey results were being presented early this week, Nikuza Donatien, one of participants in the survey said that 515 were suspected of genocide ideology, 303 files of them were taken to courts but 223 were convicted of genocide ideology living 80 others free.

The survey indicated that genocide ideology increased especially during the infiltrators’ war, Gacaca courts and during commemoration of 1994 Tutsi genocide victims.

Statistics indicate that during the 21st commemoration of genocide against Tutsi ,the Southern province recorded 31 cases of genocide ideology, Western province recorded 48 cases, Eastern province with 72 ,Northern province with 19 while Kigali city had 9 cases of genocide ideology.

The survey found that children and youth have genocide ideology which is rooted from their homes.

The survey indicated genocide ideology is on the other hand reducing tremendously thanks to taken measures of punishing genocide ideology subjects, teaching unity and reconciliation and various government programs of getting together genocide survivors and perpetrators to pave reconciliatory platforms.

Nikuze said that 83.9% of respondents confirmed that genocide ideology has been reduced compared to the past while 16.1% think that genocide ideology is rampant.

The executive secretary of CNLG, Dr Bizimana Jean Damascene said that similar research will be undertaken to know the rate of genocide ideology reduction.

The Minister of Sports and Culture, Uwacu Julienne said that having cases of genocide ideology among the youth is a serious matter and requested strengthened efforts to eradicate it.
