  • 9 ways to be a better boss

    {Being a good leader isn’t about the position you hold; you can hold a leadership position and be terrible at it.}

    For you to be a better boss, you must first understand the concept of followership; when you understand how to follow, then you wouldn’t find it difficult to understand how to lead, because they are both intertwined.

    These are some tips to being a better boss:

    {{1. Set achievable objectives }}

    A good boss must be visionary, a good boss must have goals and targets, but it would be unwise to set unrealistic goals. This will only scare your subordinates and make work a burden. Be visionary, but move step by step till you achieve the desired height.

    {{2. A good boss works }}

    The only way to earn the respect of your subordinate is when you not only work as hard as your followers but when you even work harder than them. A good boss inspires the subordinates by being a hard worker.

    {{3. A good boss recognizes the strength of the employees }}

    Everyone has his strengths and weaknesses, and it’s up to a good boss to recognise those strengths and weaknesses in the employees and assign tasks accordingly, while also helping them work on their weakness.

    {{4. A good boss motivates }}

    A good boss doesn’t frighten the employees; a good boss motivates and spurs them to be better. A good boss leads by example and motivates; good bosses don’t command and order people about.

    {{5. Communication }}

    A good boss ought to communicate well and provide the employees with clear directions and expectations.

    Also, a good boss knows how to talk to the employees. Many bosses tend to dress down their employees with their mouths, but a good boss wouldn’t.

    {{6. A good boss protects the interest of the employees }}

    A good boss isn’t selfish but is interested in the welfare of the employees and protects their interest as well; a good boss practices empathy.

    {{7. A good boss listens }}

    A good boss is a good listener. No man is an island and no man knows it all. A good boss understands that a subordinate could know something that they don’t know and learn from the subordinate.

    {{8. A good boss trusts }}

    A good boss trusts employees who are due to be trusted and delegate certain tasks to them. This will spur that employee to strive for more.

    {{9. A good boss scrutinizes own performance}}

    A good boss analyses and scrutinises own performance and makes improvement where needed. Good bosses understand that they aren’t perfect and keep assessing their performances and make relevant improvement.

    Being a good boss isn’t by the title you bear, but by the qualities you portray.

  • 7 habits you should never exhibit in your workplace

    {You ought to be the best representation of yourself at your place of work, because people will judge you based on what they see you do.}

    Whether you know this or not, there’s a subconscious part of every human that tends to notice things around them even when they don’t know it. So, people are noticing you and your reputation is solely based on what they notice.

    Now, these are some work habits that should never be found in your workplace:

    {{1. Arrogance }}

    Having confidence in your ability is a good thing, but try to make yourself feel superior and bring others down is arrogance, and this should never be found in you.

    {{2. Complaining }}

    Never complain about work; never see your job as a boring, difficult and annoying thing you have to do just to get a paycheck. You’d never grow beyond that point when you have this attitude to work.

    {{3. Procrastination }}

    Never be known in your workplace as a procrastinator; anything you can do today, do today. Stop pushing work over till the next day.

    {{4. Being defensive }}

    We all have defense mechanism in us, but more often than not, your defence mechanism is the cause of many terrible habits you indulge in. Learn to take corrections, learn from your mistakes and stop being defensive. You can never improve when you are defensive.

    {{5. Nonchalance and laziness }}

    If there are two things that’ll kill your reputation at work, it is these two — nonchalance and laziness.

    Be dedicated and committed to your work, and you’d always see the result.

    {{6. Gossip and lies }}

    Try as much as possible to steer clear of office gossips, rumours and lies. These things ruin reputation.

    {{7. Sleepiness and dullness }}

    Practice good sleep habits during the night, so that you’ll be sharp at work. Sharpness in an employee is every employer’s delight and dullness is one thing every employer detests.

    These seven habits will bring you so much harm, and there’s nothing good about them. If you must be the best in your workplace, if you must be known as a man/woman of character in your workplace, then these habits must be far from you.

  • 3 key things you should do when preparing for an interview

    {How you prepare for an interview can determine the outcome of your interview. If you prepare well, you’ll get the benefits and if you don’t, you’re most likely to fail.}

    This is how to prepare for an interview.

    {{1. Ask questions }}

    Ask questions about the firm that wants to employ you; do your research and try to know the basic things about that firm. Also, familiarising yourself with the firm will make you feel part and parcel of them, and it would even boost your confidence for the interview.

    {{2. Do your own work }}

    Try to understand the possible interview questions you’ll be asked and know how to answer them before your interview. Practise your speech, your body language, your mannerisms and everything that’ll represent you in that interview. You ought to be the best representation of yourself.

    {{3. Be positive }}

    Think positively, act positively and be positive. See yourself doing well in the interview and feel confident about it. Create a mental picture of your success, because success first of all starts in the mind.

  • 8 damaging thoughts that will only kill your self-confidence

    Your thoughts can either lift you up or bring you down; positive thoughts will make you {act positively and negative thoughts will make you act negatively.}

    There are some thoughts you shouldn’t harbour in your heart, and even when they come, you should wave them off, because negative thoughts are like termites; they’ll keep building gradually until they eat off the whole wood.

    Never let these eight thoughts have a place in your heart.

    {{1. “It’s too late”}}

    It’s never too late until you say it’s too late; many people reach the peak of their careers and whatsoever they wanted to achieve at an old age, hence the name ‘late bloomers’; but the most important thing is that they bloomed. Believing that it’s already late to achieve greatness or attain a set goal will only kill your goal.

    {{2. “I’m not good enough”}}

    There’s only one you on this planet; no other version of you – no imitation, no photocopy – just you. Why then will you believe that you aren’t good enough?

    Thinking you aren’t good enough will only kill the confidence you have in yourself.

    {{3. “They won’t accept me”}}

    You don’t need people to accept you; the only person you need is you and until you accept yourself, you’ll remain at a standstill.

    {{4. “I hate my body”}}

    Jim Rohn said – “Take care of your body; it’s the only place you have to live in.” If you hate the only body you have, how can you be successful in it. A lot of people have lost their confidence because they fail to appreciate their bodies.

    {{5. “I can’t”}}

    ‘Can’t’ is a word that shouldn’t exist in your dictionary. The words that follow can’t include failure, impossible, unachievable – and these words are the opposite of success. If you must erase any word from your dictionary, it’s ‘can’t’. The moment you say you can’t, then you can’t.

    {{6. “What will people say?”}}

    Trying to please people and get their acceptance will not only make you stuck at a point, but it’ll also kill your confidence.

    Care less about what people will say and think about you, and care more about where you are going to in life. Because people’s validation of you will only pull you down, and you don’t even need their validation to go up in the first place.

    {{7. “I give up”}}

    These three words is like putting the final nail on a coffin; never give up, because it’s only when you give up, that your journey ends. It’s like starting a long distance race and not finishing; it may be hard and tedious along the way, but the prize and glory at the end is usually worth it.

    {{8. “Everyone is moving forward but me ”}}

    Life isn’t a competition, so you should never use people’s pace and success to compare with yours. If you do this, you’ll never reach your desired heights. Putting your focus on other people wouldn’t only make you lose focus of your own journey, but will kill every belief you have in you.

    Never give these thoughts a chance in your heart, because they’ll ruin your confidence, and once your confidence is lost, almost every other thing will be lost.

  • 9 reasons you should stop living in regrets

    {Living in regrets is never the right way to go, and a lot of people carry regrets deep in their hearts for some wrong decisions they have made in the past.}

    Are you one of those people living in regrets? You have to let go or else you’ll remain stuck in a particular spot.

    These are some of the reasons you should stop living in regrets:

    {{1. You keep yourself backward }}

    You can’t move forward when you are stuck in the past. You jeopardise your future whenever you let your past hold you bound.

    {{2. You’d miss opportunities }}

    You can never see what’s at the front when your eyes are at the back, same way you can never see the opportunities that lie ahead when your focus is on what happened in the past.

    {{3. Your life will be at a standstill }}

    Focus is a major catalyst for success. Every true success story has a great element of focus attached to it. When your focus is on the past you can never reach the desired heights.

    {{4. Happiness will be far from you }}

    You can’t live in regrets and be a happy person. One defining factor that links everyone living in regret is unhappiness and deep sadness. How much gain is there in letting your heart wallow in sadness?

    {{5. Mistakes are only experiences }}

    Mistakes are only experiences that will toughen you up for the future or teach you vital lessons you need to know in life.

    {{6. You only have one life to live }}

    Yolo – You only live once, people say – and that’s the reality. You only have just one life to live; why should you decide to waste it living in regrets?

    {{7. Bad outcomes can’t define you }}

    You aren’t defined by the mistakes you’ve made in the past – a better definition of you is what you are doing in the present to better your future. So you have no reason to let a past mistake define you. Guess what? A lot of people have made worse mistakes and still reached great heights.

    {{8. It doesn’t change the past }}

    No matter how much you beat yourself and live in regret, you can never change the hands of time. The best thing you can do is learn from the past and avoid making the same mistake again.

    {{9. You damage your self-esteem }}

    Living in regrets will make you see yourself lowly; you’d only ruin your self-esteem and confidence when you do this. Be proud of who you are, be happy that you are alive. You are alive means you have the chance to right your wrongs; don’t let a past decision ruin you.

    A life lived in regret is a life that’s wasted. So why then are you wasting your life?

  • 6 benefits of making mistakes

    {Mistakes can be seen from two perspectives — as a failure or a chance to right your wrong.}

    Making mistakes might have it benefits, only if you see it as a chance to right your wrong.

    Below are some of the benefits of making mistakes:

    {{1. Mistakes help you grow and evolve }}

    You could remain stuck with what you know when you don’t make mistakes, but making mistakes will open your eyes to new knowledge that you probably don’t even know, and that will help you grow as a person.

    {{2. It spurs you on }}

    You might not know this, but making mistakes bring an additional desire to want to be right, and that will spur you on to actually get better knowledge. I can’t count the number of things I’ve learnt from making mistakes, and those things learnt will never leave you; they would become a part of you.

    3. Mistakes also serve as a warning. If you make a mistake that brings about a bad result, or someone around you makes that mistake, trust me when I say you’d never make that mistake again.

    {{4. Mistakes bring you back to reality }}

    Sometimes, too much success might tempt you to feel invincible, proud and even unrealistic. Making mistakes will always bring you that humble feeling that will make you realise that you are just human at the end of the day.

    {{5. It makes you wiser }}

    With each mistake you make comes a lesson, and when you learn from that mistake, you become wiser.

    A quote by Al Franken: “Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it’s a fatal mistake, which, at least others can learn from.”

    {{6. Mistakes teach you to forgive }}

    One great thing to learn from mistakes is that they teach you to forgive — to forgive yourself and probably to forgive others. Mistakes teach you let go, because if you don’t let go, you can never forgive.

    A quote by Steve Maraboli: “The truth is – unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realise that the situation is over, you cannot move forward.”

  • 7 tips to solve those money problems affecting your marriage

    {Money is an important factor in marriages, and when couples start to have those money problems, it can transfer to other parts of the marriage, including the love, happiness and satisfaction that once existed.}

    I’ve written on some of those money problems that could ruin your marriage, and this article will teach you how to avoid them.

    {{1. Be on the same page }}

    Being on the same page with your partner is the first step to solving your money problems. When you both have the same vision and similar future plans, it’ll become easier to bring this understanding in solving your money differences.

    {{2. Identify the spender and saver }}

    One major reason why many couples have conflict when it comes to money matters is their different money habits. If one partner is a spender and the other is a saver, the marriage will suffer from it. Identifying the spender and saver is the first step to solving this problem.

    {{3. Let there be a meeting point }}

    Both partners should be willing to cut short on their habit, and the issue of being a spender and a saver will be far forgotten.

    {{4. Live within your means }}

    Another reason many couples are finding it difficult in finance that’s eating up their marriage is that they don’t live within their means. You set yourself into many problems when you live above your means, and this will definitely affect your marriage.

    {{5. Discuss your demons }}

    What money habit do you have that’s eating up your finances? It could be debt, love for luxury, spending without planning etc. You know where you are wrong financially, so be open about it with your partner or your marriage might just suffer for it.

    {{6. Understand each other }}

    Another major reason why couples argue and fight over money matter is because they don’t understand each other; they only understand what they want individually but not together.

    Listen to your partner and try to understand where your partner is driving at, and then plan together.

    {{7. Learn the basics of fiance }}

    More importantly, learn the basics of financial principles and do things together. Plan together, have a budget, make provision for savings, and set your goals together.

    If you are on different page in the money department, then even the love department will tend to suffer as well.

  • 10 things you should be willing to give up this month to have a successful month

    {With every month comes opportunities, as well as challenges; that’s what life is and that’s what it brings to you – and it’s only those who are willing to take those opportunities when it arises and those who can grab the challenges by its horn will go on to be successful.}

    These are those things you should be willing to give up if you want your month to be successful:

    {{1. Unhealthy habits }}

    Choose to cut off every form of unhealthy habit like smoking and taking too much alcohol, use of hard drugs, unhealthy eating habits, poor sleeping pattern and lack of physical activity.

    A quote by Jim Rohn: “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live in.”

    {{2. Ingratitude }}

    Choose to quit every form of ingratitude and complaining this month. Learn to be more grateful and appreciate things. Appreciate life, because there’s always hope when there’s life, appreciate family, appreciate friends and appreciate love.

    {{3. Negative thinking }}

    Stop every form of negative thinking; it’ll only bring about a negative energy that will kill your desire and momentum to achieve any tangible thing this month.

    Shun every form of negative thinking and try to be more positive about life this month.

    {{4. Distractions }}

    Choose to be focused and cut off any form of distractions. Anything taking you away from your goal should be cut off from your life.

    {{5. Laziness }}

    Laziness and success don’t mix; gear yourself up to work hard, not sometimes but always. Let laziness be far from you, and you’ll see just how much progress you will make this month.

    {{6. Procrastination }}

    Learn to do today that which you ought to do today. Make a decision to quit from every form of procrastination. Procrastination is a success killer.

    {{7. Giving up }}

    Choose not to give up this month, no matter what life throws at you. It’s already over and you have nothing to gain when you give up.

    Always make that decision to see failure as a stepping stone to success; failure only means – try again.

    {{8. Not giving your best }}

    If it’s not your best shot then it’s not good enough. Choose to do your best in everything you find yourself; if it’s not your best, then it’s not good enough.

    {{9. Excuses }}

    Give up excuses and take the bull by the horn. Stop making excuses for your failures and start taking responsibilities for your actions.

    {{10. Stop trying to control that which you cannot }}

    According to Epictetus, “Some things are up to us and some things are not up to us.”

    Stop trying to control that which you cannot, stop living in worries when you can be happy, stop living in fear when you can be bold.

    Put a hold on these ten things this month, and there’ll be no limit to how far you can go.
