Gatsibo: Five arrested over misallocated improved bean seeds

Four leaders and a businessman who distributed selected bean seeds in Remera sector of Gatsibo district have been arrested over alleged crime of misallocating government’s resources by selling seeds the government gave out to be distributed to farmers for free.

The arrested include the agronomist in Remera sector, the executive secretary of Nyamagana, the officer in charge of social welfare in Bugera cell and the businessman in charge of distributing seeds in Remera sector in the program of helping citizens to get selected improved seeds.

In an interview the spokesperson of police in Eastern province, IP Emmanuel Kayigi has held with Isango Star Radio, he said that they were arrested after suspected of packing and preparing to sell the said beans abroad yet they are meant to be given to farmers.

“They packed beans that were in the shop, preparing to sell them abroad since they are expensive .When the price of standard beans is Rwf 400 it costs Rwf 600 in other regions,” he said.

Kayigi explained, the culprits were arrested through collaboration with citizens who provided information after selling 7.5 tons of beans.

As law promulgate in the article 325 of Rwanda penal code, whoever involved in misallocation of public wealth is given a punishment ranging from five to seven years of imprisonment and a fine ranging from twice to five folds of the value of misallocated wealth.

IP Kayigi said that the investigation on alleged crimes is ongoing.

He commended citizens who provided information saying the police will keep confidentiality and urged them to continue the collaboration.
