The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources has revealed a plan of building women’s capacity in managing household nutrition and family wealth.
This was revealed yesterday by the Minister of Agriculture, Mukeshimana Geraldine in a press briefing about the Compact2025 program which aims to have eradicated hunger and malnutrition by 2025.
“We are putting efforts in educating women as well as increasing their knowledge in decision making in the usage of household’s property and wealth,” said Mukeshimana.
A recent survey indicated that children born of illiterate mothers are mostly affected by malnutrition compared to children born of informed mothers.
She further said that more efforts will be concentrated in establishing family granaries and mobilizing citizens to use them to store food for drought seasons and other periods of disasters.
Regarding the Compact 2025, Mukeshimana said that on 24th March 2016, a meeting will be held in Kigali with participants from Rwanda, Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Malawi (countries that have the common vision of Compact2025) where they’ll be sharing knowledge on how hunger and malnutrition can be eliminated.
“Participants from these four countries will explore all possibilities of eradicating hunger and malnutrition by 2025,” she said.
Compact2025 is a program launched in November 2015 in collaboration with International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) ,various partners who already share knowledge and demonstrate urgent innovations facilitating the eradication of hunger and malnutrition.
The 4th census on Rwandans livelihoods in 2014/2015 indicated that 38% of children were affected by malnourishment, down from 51% in 2005.
When these results were released, President Paul Kagame warned that there should be no malnutrition cases among children since the government plans aimed at improving welfare of vulnerable and poor people like VUP and Girinka among others, are supposed to address such challenges.
