REB sacks 800 English Mentors

The Rwanda Education Board has expelled 800 contractual staff in what it says “is in Government and citizen’s interests.”

Those who were dismissed are English Language School Based Mentors from Rwanda and outside Rwanda.

REB said that agreements for half of the dismissed workers have already finished while for others their contracts have been prematurely terminated.

Affected mentors were outraged by the unexpected decisions as some of them had already received loans from banks.

Speaking to IGIHE, the CEO of REB Gasana Janvier said the decision to terminate their contracts is not against the law.

He added that those employees were notified about the cessation of contracts one month before the decision came into effect

Gasana said that it is understandable that some of them were not happy with their contracts being terminated, “but in fact there is a reason behind their contract cessation which is in the country’s interests”

Expelled staff will receive their August salary as confirmed by REB

However REB also said in coming days it will recruit senior mentors in each district therefore those who are capable will compete for those positions.
