Burundian independent media have written to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon about the crackdown against them, with a copy to several regional leaders including President of Rwanda, a country that hosts over 25, 000 Burundian refugees.
The letter is from Bob Rugurika of Radio Publique Africaine, Patrick Nduwimana of Radio Bonesha FM, Anne Niyuhire of Radio Isanganiro, Innocent Muhozi of Radi-Tele Renaissance, Alexandre Niyungeko of UBJ and the Association Burundaise de radiodiffuseires.
The Journalists wrote to Ban Ki moon with a copy to regional Heads of state that the insecurity that prevails in Burundi has also affected the media on all aspects, namely the destruction of media infrastructures by agents of Government and physical security threats to journalists.
They said “By the time Burundi is preparing the elections, the reopening of the media is a prerequisite for a free electoral process, transparent and credible.”
