University student arrested with 16 stolen computers

Police in Nyagatare District are holding one Paul Gombaniro, a student of University of Rwanda-College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Veterinary medicine, in connection with the theft of 16 computers.

Gombaniro was arrested on March 29 following several complaints filed to the police.

According to eastern region police spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi, the suspect was apprehended as he was looking for buyers among fellow students.

“Several students who bought laptops from him expressed concerns about the source of the computers and filed complaints with us; we conducted an operation and indeed when we got to Gombaniro he admitted that all the 15 laptops and one desktop he sold were actually stolen,” said IP Kayigi.

He added that police is currently conducting more investigations to know exactly where he was stealing the computers or if there are other people connected to this theft.

“We are thankful to the students that suspected something fishy and reported to us; this is an indication of community policing – something that we always encourage everyone to do,” he added.

He also went on to discourage youth from seeking quick and easy money through illegal practices like theft, where they end up paying direly.

If Gombaniro is found guilty he risks a jail sentence of up to two years as stipulated under article 300 of the penal code.
