Over 900 newly elected local leaders attend civic education

Over 900 district and leaders of Kigali city are attending a civic education that started yesterday in Gabiro.The Minister of Local Government says that during this civic education to last two weeks, local leaders have to commit to keeping away from mistakes that were committed by their predecessors but instead work for common interests and progress of the people that entrusted them with leadership positions.

The Minister of Local Government, Francis Kaboneka made the request yesterday at the official launch of the civic education for district and Kigali city leaders.

“We are required to act for common interest of Rwandans .To attain this we are supposed to execute many activities within a short time. Our actions have to exceed words,” he said.

He asked them to work as a single body for the progress of their performance.
“You are all required to implement government plans. These must be completed by taking one direction. You have to feel responsible for your works and maintain Rwandans unity if you want to keep in line with the social pact you agreed with Rwandans,” he said.

In the recent 13th leadership retreat some local leaders were pointed at for having failed to implement envisaged government’s plans but concentrated on promoting their own interests.

Kaboneka reminded them that a leader doesn’t become a great person because of the position he/she holds but must first demonstrate good performance to merit and earn honor.

“Leadership is not realized through holding positions but deeds. You can’t claim greatness unless when you contribute to the progress of citizens you lead and the country in general,” he noted.

The mayor of Ruhango district, Mbabazi François Xavier said that the civic education will equip them with capacities of taking strategic measures of by addressing people’s challenges through working closely with them.
