Nyanza students acquire knowledge on community policing

{Over 650 students of GS Mater Dei in Nyanza District have committed to advancing community policing ideals during their upcoming school holidays.}

The commitment was made during a community policing awareness meeting held on July 15 at the school premises and presided over by the District Police Commander Superintendent of Police (SP) Athanase Ruganintwari.

The DPC enlightened the students about common crimes and their role in fighting them.
Students were also urged to play a lead role in crime prevention through information sharing and taking part in neighborhood watch programme.

“You will soon break off from school and go back home in different places; while you are there, be exemplary to your generation, family and community,” SP Ruganintwari said.

He added that, since the youth is the biggest component of the Rwandan society, their participation in community policing activities will significantly contribute to sustainable security.

He further urged them to aim higher in their education, be patriots and citizens of integrity.

The students pledged to fight drug abuse, child abuse and gender based violence, which are some of the common crimes.

“It has been proven that most of these offenses are committed by people who are under the influence of drugs, that’s why we request you to champion the fight against drug abuse,” the DPC told students.
