American billionaire advises Rwandans against Kagame’s departure

An American billionaire, Howard Buffet, also director of Howard Buffet Foundation has advised Rwandans to keep President Paul Kagame as their president as they still need his insightfulness and ingenuity. He gave the advice yesterday during the World Economic Forum on Africa (WEF) held in Kigali.

During his presentation, Howard Buffet said that Rwandans should change their leader at the country’s risk.

“Let’s not think that we know better what Rwandans need other than their choices. If president Kagame was not allowed to lead more seven years in advance, we would not be here,” he said.’

He said that the World must emulate Rwanda’s stance on taking the country forward under the stewardship of president, calling the country “a credible partner in business.”

“Among all countries we collaborate with on this continent, we are surprised by Rwanda because the government implements and achieves its targets,” he said.

Last year, more than 3,000,000 Rwandans petitioned to the parliament requesting the amendment of the constitution to allow president Kagame stand for another term.

It was later confirmed by the nationwide referendum held in December, 2015 where 98 % of Rwandans voted ‘yes’.

Howard Buffet Foundation sponsors agricultural activities in Rwanda.

Last year, the Foundation gave a grant of USD 500 million to support agriculture intensification and capacity building.

The Foundation has started an irrigation project covering 1,280 hectares in Nasho of Kirehe district and supporting Karama, an agricultural vocational training school in Bugesera district.

Howard Buffett sits on a committee that organizes presidential debates in the United States.
