Dengeyabagabo, a bar attendant in Gisozi who was in the house sleeping, sneaked and entered into the bedroom where the victim was sleeping with her elder sisters.
He managed to undress the victim and defiled her before running back to his room as the child screamed thus awakening others.
The victim’s parents who were sleeping in another room called the Police immediately to rescue their daughter.
Police intercepted the suspect as he pretended to be still sleeping.
The innocent victim was transferred to Kacyiru Police hospital for medical attention.
According to reports, the suspect went into the victim’s bedroom in the middle of the night as she was sleeping and then started undressing her.
In the process, she had someone over him and then screamed for help.
She tried to run away from him but the latter over-powered her. The suspect is held at Gisozi Police station.
The District Police Commander Superintendent Tom Murangira condemned the criminal act describing it as “inhuman and punishable.”
He called upon the community, especially parents to allocate enough time to their children to know what could be bothering them, noting that it will partly help to identify and prevent such inhuman acts.
Supt. Murangira also said that Police and local authorities are always conducting sensitization campaigns against crimes in the province, especially against Gender Based Violence and drug abuse, and defilement of innocent children.
“We are planning to hold different meetings with Gasabo residents so that people are aware of ways of fighting against defilement.”
He urged parents to be vigilant and watch over their children and try to be fully available and avail protection to their children.
If convicted, Dengeyabagabo will be punished under Article 191 of the penal code which states that any person, who commits child defilement, shall be liable to life imprisonment with special provisions.
