Police Impound Cannabis in Operation

{{Police in Kamonyi District conducted a cordon and search operation and arrested three residents with illicit brew commonly known as ibikangari and several pellets of cannabis.}}

The cordon and search was conducted in Mugina sector, Mbati cell where Therese Nirere was arrested with 150 litres of the dangerous brew while three others namely Aloys Bugabo, Samuel Bavugirije and Daniel Kadendezi were with 746 pellets of cannabis.

Apart from Kadendezi who managed to escape, the rest of the suspects are under Police custody at Musambira Police station.

The seized illicit brew and drugs were destroyed in presence of local population, Police, Army and Prosecution.

Police in Kamonyi said the operation was aimed at cracking down the crime ring, especially in Mugina sector where most crimes are reported.

Most of the crimes reported are drug related. Police has been carrying out awareness campaigns to combat the drug vice in the country, which has seen a number of criminals arrested and prosecuted and drugs seized and destroyed.

The Kamonyi District Police Commander, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Augustine Rurangirwa warned residents soon after the operation to desist from the habit of manufacturing and trading of illicit brew and drugs.

He said that Police shall not tolerate those involved in such illegal businesses. “We will continue to fight these crimes until those involved are apprehended,”

CIP Rurangirwa further noted that illicit brew and cannabis have become the major source of all sorts of crimes in the area.

The success of this operation was possible thanks to the cooperation from the public who provided information on wrong doers.
