Suspected Electric Cable Thugs Arrested

Two suspects including Saidi Safari 24 and Jean Pierre Mbyariyehe 25 were arrested in Ngoma District in connection with theft of electric cables.

The incident took place in Musamvu, Kibungo sector where they had climbed on top of electric poles in the area and cut the cables.

They are currently held at Kibungo Police Station.

It is said that the suspects had made it a habit to steal cables, which are sold as scraps.

Police said cases of stealing electric cables had been reported, and the suspects are said to be part of the ring in the area that deals in this illegal business in the district.

The electric cables are mostly stolen at night.

Safari is a former employee of Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA), who was suspended due to misconduct.

According to Supt Bénoît Nsengiyumva, Police Spokesperson Eastern Region, said cases of theft of electric cables are few, but added that “tough measures have been initiated to deal with even the few cases that still exist.”

He noted that the arrest should send a “warning to whoever is involved in such acts” that it is a matter of time before they are arrested.
