Two children die in abandoned excavation crater

The tragedy happened on Sunday when both children drowned in the abandoned crater.

Police spokesperson in Western Province, CIP Emmanuel Kayigi has told IGIHE that the crater was illegally used for precious stones extraction.

“It was used to illegally extract cassiterite. Artisan miners were warned against the extraction and abandoned the site, leaving it uncovered,” he said.

CIP Kayigi warned residents against illegal mineral extraction and requested miners to assign security personnel to prevent children from playing around mining sites.

He also urged local leaders on collaboration to clear unused mining sites to prevent losses of lives.
