MTN Foundation donates Rwf 50m to government ICT, Solar programs

The government of Rwanda has benefited from a donation of Rwf 50, 000, 0000 from MTN Foundation that will be used to expand electricity using solar panels to 416 households in Nyaruguru and Gisagara districts and buy 100 computers for cell executive secretaries.

The ceremony of handing over the donation was held yesterday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Infrastructure.

A half of donated Rwf 50, 000, 0000 will be allocated to the Ministry of Local Government to buy computers for 100 cell executive secretaries while the remaining half is reserved for the Ministry of Infrastructure to expand solar energy to 416 households from Nyaruguru and Gisagara districts in Southern Province.

The State Minister in Charge of Social Welfare in MINALOC, Munyeshyaka Vincent lauded MTN Foundation for the donation and highlighted that the computers will help cell executive secretaries improve and give faster services.

“The Rwf 25,000,000 from MTN is meant to buy 100 computers for cell executive secretaries. Service delivery was decentralized and prioritizes citizens’ needs. We have built capacities for sector and district leadership and this turn is for cells,” he said.

The distribution of 100 computers will be based on areas without access to electricity and considering cell executive secretaries who didn’t receive computers under existing government programs.

The Minster of Infrastructure, Musoni James said that the program will help to expand solar energy to 600,000 families by 2018.

“The donation is a good gesture of MTN Foundation commitment to supporting government target of having at least 70% of Rwandan households accessing electricity by 2018. We expect 600,000 families to have solar energy at the time,” he said.

Zulfat MUKARUBEGA, the Vice Chairperson of MTN Foundation said that the donation is meant to support the government program of extending power distribution for faster development.

“We have thought about the government’s program of extending power distribution. That is why MTN Foundation has donated Rwf 25,000,000 to MININFRA to enable 416 households access solar energy. Besides, you know that you can’t reach desired progress without embracing technology. That is why more than Rwf 25 million was also donated to MINALOC for the purchase of computers to 100 cell executive secretaries,” she said.
