Another soldier of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was shot dead in the night of last Friday around 21:00 hours at the base of Rwanda Defense Forces located in Rutagara cell, Rubavu sector of Rubavu district.
He was shot dead as he illegally crossed the border and declined to stop when requested by RDF soldiers.
He becomes the second Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) soldier shot dead in Rwanda in two weeks. The first was shot dead on June 17th 2016 as he illegally arrived at the base of Rwanda’s soldiers in Rubavu sector.
On Saturday, the Expanded Joint Verification Mechanism (EJVM) started following up the circumstances of the death as the dead soldier was handed to FARDC soldiers the same day in Rubavu sector.
Capt. Pascal Nzaramba commanding Rwanda’s soldiers at the border of Rwanda, DRC said that the killed soldier had no identifications.
“He had no identifications but we carefully checked him and realized that he had four bullets of Small Machine Gun .It seems that FDLR fighters are around intending to assault us. We assure Rwandans of security,” he said.
EJVM has so far declined to release findings from investigations of the two shootings.
The deputy head of the EJVM, Colonel Philbert Okanza who led the team on Saturday said “I cannot say anything because it is still a secret. However, it is overwhelming and we are going to make a report as we are required,” he said.
An RDF officer however said; “Last time they didn’t reveal any information and we received no report. This pushed DRC not to pick the corpse of their soldier till we buried him. For this round DRC soldiers declared to have missed a soldier and realized that he was the shot one,” he said.
The dead body of the second shot DRC soldier was handed to FARDC on Saturday around 6:00 pm with military honor on both sides.
