The Chief of Operations under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Commissioner of Police (CP) Emmanuel Butera, on May 12 visited the Rwanda Formed Police (FPU) base camp in Malakal and urged them to maintain the spirit and be result-oriented.

He thanked them for maintaining good partnership with the people, especially those who are internally displaced, police advisors and other community watch groups, sharing information in order to maintain security and prevent the occurrence of crimes in IDP camps.

One of the responsibilities of the Rwandan FPU in UNMISS is to ensure protection of internally displaced people in camps in Malakal.

He commended them for exhibiting maximum discipline and commitment in executing their mandate.

“your country tasked you to fulfill your duties diligently; you must be guided by the will, training and professionalism, all which ultimately produce quality results,” the UNMISS Chief of Operations said.

“The Commander-in-Chief reminded us to always be effective and efficient in service delivery and to promote human security always,” he said.

The UNMISS Chief of Operations, who was accompanied by the coordinator of Protection of Civilians (POC) ACP Alan Sangoroh, was received by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rogers Rutikanga, the contingent commander of Rwandan peacekeepers in South Sudan.

CP Butera later met with UN Police Advisors from different countries working in various POC sites and discussed on operational and administrative issues in line with the mission mandate.

He challenged them to work as a team and learn from each others’ experiences to solve the problems of civilians in POC sites.

The chief of operations urged the police advisors to always engage the community in order to deter, detect and plan ahead to improve the security of civilians .

Currently, RNP maintains a force of over 1000 peacekeepers operating in seven missions, with over 250 of them in South Sudan.
