As part of Tigo Rwanda’s activities to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, the company’s senior management led by Tigo CEO Tongai Maramba yesterday ,unveiled a solar power system that they donated to the Bisesero Genocide Memorial in Karongi District, Western Province.
This donation is part of the ‘Tigo 100 Days of Love’ initiative that comprises of a series of activities to build partnerships with the local community during this year’s genocide commemoration period.
Commenting on the visit, Tigo Rwanda Chief Executive Officer, Tongai Maramba said: “: “Tigo is carrying out similar activities across the country in line with its commitment to remember and honor the lives that were lost in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.We strongly recognize the huge role played by genocide memorials in ensuring history is not repeated.”
The solar system, valued at Frw 4.5 million, will provide lighting for the nine buildings that comprise the Bisesero Genocide Memorial.
Commenting on the donation, Pierre Kayitana, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Tigo Rwanda explained: “Through our partnership with the National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG), we identified Bisesero as one the few remaining memorial sites in Rwanda with no electricity”.
