Ineffective implementation of such development programs has affected Eastern Province which has a majority of its citizens in the second Ubudehe category which includes poor citizens.
The governor of Eastern Province, Odette Uwamariya says that more than 25 people including five executive secretaries have been arrested over jeopardizing programs meant for raising citizens’ welfare.
She revealed this last week as she attended the talk president Paul Kagame held with opinion leaders in Eastern Province.
“We have pursued most of the people who were involved in the chain of malpractices hindering the successfulness of government programs meant for citizens’ progress.
We have jailed over 25 people including leaders and others involved in such wrong acts. These include foreigners, five executive secretaries and leaders in charge of VUP among others,” she said.
She added that such punishments will serve as an example for others who must understand that the drive towards eradicating poverty is everyone’s responsibility and become interested in avoiding malpractices that hold back development.
Eastern province has 2,500,000 people. It is the largest province of the country and depending upon farming.
The EICV 4 indicates that Eastern Province reduced poverty levels from 42.6% to 37.5%.The number of extreme poverty was reduced from 20.8% to 15.2%.
Governor Uwamariya says that best practice of farming and commitment of better implementation of government programs like Girinka, Ubudehe and VUP, among others, will be the best tools towards eradicating poverty.
