Police takes anti-drugs abuse campaign to CIESK School

{The ongoing Rwanda National Police (RNP) awareness campaign against abuse of drugs was taken to CIESK secondary school located in Nyamirambo, Nyarugenge District where students and the school administration vowed to fight the vice.}

The campaign was conducted by the RNP directorate of anti-narcotics under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

With drug abuse still being rated high among the youth including students, Rwanda National Police is actively involved in school-to-school awareness programme teaching the young generation on the ill-effects of abusing illicit drugs and the legal repercussions involved.

Inspector of Police (IP) Daniel Nsabimana, while speaking to the students, appealed to them to “stand for what you represent as future leaders” by refraining from such unlawful behavior, instead partner with police to identify especially the suppliers of narcotics like cannabis, to break the chain of supply.

“Education and drug abuse don’t mix. As young and able people you have a big role to play in crime prevention through community policing, and as students of CIESK, we look forward to having you on board to ensure that drug dealers are identified and face justice.”

The youth, through their different policing forums, have been credited for championing anti-crime awareness, including fighting drug abuse.

Currently, there are over 800 anti-crime clubs established in schools.

The Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing Organisation (RYVCPO) composed of about 20,000 members currently, including secondary and university students and those who have so far graduated, created in 2013, is also instrumental in promoting the socio-economic transformation by fighting and preventing crimes in partnership with police and local authorities.

Amani Banzubaze, the headmaster of CIESK pledged to take on the mantle against drug abuse in and around the school, and appealed to students to work with police to promote safety and security in the country.
