{Police have trained 84 members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) from Nyabihu District in crime prevention and report and also urged them to ensure they serve as a bridge between the police and the public.}
The development comes at a time when Nyabihu CPCs are being praised for their restless efforts in ensuing public safety.
The 84 members of CPC were trained by the District Community Liaison Officer Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Aliane Muhorakeye, along with the Executive Secretary of Bigogwe Sector Albert Kamali Bidobe on March 30.
During the training, AIP Muhorakeye told the trainees that there are major crimes that police is determined to stamp out and that can only be achieved with their involvement.
“We want to build a nation that is crime-free and we have to go step by step – first by addressing the source which in this case is drug abuse. This is why we have for long embarked on sensitization drug abuse. We want you to join this cause and we ensure we eliminate narcotics and address crimes in general,” said AIP Muhorakeye.
She added that; “since you understand well the effects of drug abuse to the society and the consumer, you must make it your sworn responsibility to fight them through sensitizing the youth against drug abuse and working closely with security agencies to ensure traffickers and consumers are apprehended.”
The DCLO also spoke at length about the effects of Gender Based Violence and Child abuse and said Rwanda is among the countries with very minimal figures of GBV and Child abuse but went on to emphasize that serious measures need to be implemented to ensure that even the minimal figures are eliminated.
The Executive Secretary, Kamali, thanked the police for the training and committed to ensure that what members of the CPCs have learnt is extend to their colleagues in different areas.
Japhet Kamanzi, a member of the community policing committee pointed out some men were walking away with battering their wives “But we are not going to let this go on as we are not committed to bring this kind of an abuse to an end.”
