WASAC warns on water theft

The management of WASAC has warned households that are engaged in illegal water connections and meter by-pass to stop the habit henceforth because they interfere with the supply system and increase the non-revenue water, creating losses and stifle water services delivery.

This was revealed by the CEO of WASAC, James Sano in a radio talk show aired on Radio Rwanda yesterday.

“We have realized water theft on many occasions. Some people tamper with the meters making it difficult for WASAC staff to measure and bill for the quantity of water used. This is in addition to other people who close water systems without authorization,” he said.

The government of Rwanda targets to distribute water to 100% of the population by 2017.Sano explained that these fraudulent acts cause the loss of money that would be spent on distribution of water to regions that have not yet accessed water.

Apart from ordinary citizens, Sano explained, some employees of WASAC are involved in the chain of such wrong acts citing that some, no precise numbers given were arrested last week.

Regarding the matter of water shortage in some localities of Kigali, Sano shared explained that the affected regions are located far from water sources.

Methode Rutagungira, the head of urban water and sanitation at WASAC recently told IGIHE that new water treatment plants are being constructed so that the problem of water shortage will be history by 2018.
