Lightning strikes eight students, two teachers in Nyamasheke

{Eight children and two teachers in Nyamasheke district were struck by thunder yesterday, with two of them including a teacher, in critical condition. They are admitted at Kibogora hospital while others have been released. }

The striking hit Groupe Scolaire Muramba in Rugali cell around 4:00 pm as students were in class when it rained.

Eight children have been taken to Hanika Health Center as Uwimana Damas, the executive secretary of Macuba sector says.

“No one died. The victims were taken to Hanika Health Center in bad shape. One teacher, Nzabahimana Patrice, and a student are in critical condition; they are in comatose. Others were not seriously injured and will soon be released,” he said.
He further said that the school had no lightning protection system but have since ordered for the rods.

In October last year, the State Minister in charge of primary and secondary education, Olivier Rwamukwaya met heads of schools in Nyamasheke and Rusizi districts and advised them to buy lightning protection systems some of who have not complied.
