Police say several people have been killed or injured in an early morning train crash in southern Germany.

The two trains collided near the town of Bad Aibling, in Bavaria, on Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for police in Upper Bavaria confirmed to German news agency DPA that several people had died.

Al Jazeera’s Dominic Kane, who is reporting from Berlin, said the trains had collided head on.

He said more than 100 people were reportedly injured, many of them seriously, and it was expected that the number of deaths could climb.

“Obviously German emergency services are scrambling resources right at this moment,” our correspondent said.

The DPA news agency reported that one train derailed after the collision and several carriages overturned.

It said eight rescue helicopters were standing on a lawn near the entrance to Bad Aibling and further rescue staff were on the way to the scene of the crash.
