{The Ministry of Trade and Industry has said that it has an expanded project of launching a high school teaching tailoring and embroidery to empower more youths with garment and apparel sewing skills. }
The Minister of Trade and Industry Francois Kanimba said that the tailoring sector should be well supported since its products are universally needed by all people from all walks of life.
Mid January this year, the minister met tailors to discuss how to promote the textile sub-sector in the country where he said; “We have a large project in the offing whereof we shall be launching a tailoring school in Rwanda. We have realized that other rich countries have similar schools.”
Kanimba said that Chinese operating in Rwanda are ready to train 300 tailors who will operate in an industry expected to start soon which will provide job opportunities to many people.
“They have told us that the first thing they need to concentrate efforts is teaching local tailors how to make beautiful clothes through trainings,” he said.
Workforce Development Authority and National Industrial Research and Development Agency are studying the project after which they will hand over a report to government with recommendations.
Such efforts are meant to promote clothes made in Rwanda. MINICOM has further requested Private Sector Federation (PSF) to establish a particular section on tailoring and garments production, distinct from other crafts.
