Varsity Guild Presidents in crime prevention drive

{Former and current Guild Presidents of higher institutions of learning met at Kigali Management Institute (KIM) on May 23 in a one day meeting that aimed at putting ideas together on how to reinforce the initiatives meant to improve safety and development activities. }

The students’ leaders under an umbrella; ‘Patriotic Youth of Rwanda’ were joined by about 300 other students from various colleges and universities.

According to Geofrey Kagame, the national coordinator of the group, the idea to come together came when they were attending a civic education programme at Nkumba Ubutore Training Centre in Burera District and their will to support security institutions like Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) to fight and prevent crimes.

“We believe it’s our responsibility to sustain which has been achieved and support other security and development initiatives as patriotic Rwandans. We want to spearhead this noble course and fill the footsteps of our brothers, sisters, parents who liberated this country and continue to drive its transformation agenda,” Kagame said.

“Some of the members are willing to join these security forces, we are also looking at how we can spearhead crime prevention awareness, how to support vulnerable groups. In general, we are driven by the zeal to see our country achieve more.”

While speaking the the youth, Senior Supt. Teddy Ruyenzi, the Director for Political and Civic Education in the department of Community Policing at RNP, commended them for showcasing a patriotic spirit and setting and example and line for their young brothers and sisters.

SSP Ruyenzi took them through the security history of the country, the liberation struggle and urged them to maintain the culture of patriotism in the face of the country’s fast development.

“Strengthen the security, safety and peace efforts and fight crimes like human trafficking, corruption and other forms of injustices,” Ruyenzi told the youth.

“Desist any form of temptation that tries to tilt you from your vision and report whoever wants to lure you in criminal activities.”

Norbert Shyerezo, the coordinator of the National Youth Council (NYC) urged them to strive for self reliance, preserve the dignity of Rwandans and be job creators rather than seekers.
