Commemoration Prayers Held to Honour Gatsibo Genocide Victims


At Kicukiro Parish, prayers were held to commemorate victims of Genocide that hailed from the current Gatsibo district formerly part of the larger Murambi Commune.

The prayers were conducted by Father Dr. Laurent Rutinduka aimed at paying tribute to victims of genocide that hailed from Murambi commune’ but were killed in Kigali and parts of Byumba and Kibungo.

Fr. Dr. Rutinduka told the congregation attending commemoration prayers that most of the victims had fled Murambi commune that was headed by brutal Mayor (Bourgmestre) Gatete Jean Baptiste.

Since 1990, as Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) rebels from the border area, most Tutsi’s were rounded up and killed by the notorious Mayor Gatete on suspicion that they were collaborators of the (Inkotanyi) RPA rebels.

Fr. Dr. Rutinduka said this was the time to condemn Genocide and those who planned and executed it. He added that it was also time to honour those that were killed during the genocide but also think of rebuilding Rwanda.
