The East African parliamentarians who gathered in Kigali on “Extractive and Mineral processing Industries in EAC” identified “Natural Resources” as one of its priority sectors, which has the potential for poverty reduction and regional trade.
Among the participants were Members of Parliament of the EALA, the Geology and Mines Department, MINIRENA as well as the Private Sector.
The objective of this workshop was to establish an enabling environment which encourages investments in the mineral processing industries.
It was highlighted that Mineral certification was initiated in Rwanda to conduct mining and trading at a standard, internationally accepted.
Speaking to participant in the workshop, Biryabarema Michael of Geology and Mines Department in Rwanda has said “All mineral exports from Rwanda are tagged (traceable to the mines);” and gives additional values to Rwanda’s resources.
As a way forward during the EALA workshop; it was agreed that in terms of laws and policies- country members of EAC should harmonize them in order to actively develop Mining industry in East Africa.
