Members of NWC considered that participation in small informal but paying jobs can empower women to gain economic independence and earn respect from their spouses thus reducing on domestic violence.

Uwingabiye Alice, the president of National Women Council in Eastern Province, unveiled a plan to mobilize women into cooperatives to create their own jobs for their progress.

“We will keep mobilizing women to work together in cooperatives for development purposes. If the plan is adopted, you will no longer hear cases where women are beaten or violated since a woman’s participation in the progress of the family will be apparent,” she said.

Uwingabiye further commended the achievements attained in the past five years including supporting vulnerable individuals, encouraging women to join cooperatives, alleviating Nyakatsi, accessing medical insurance, bank loans and family planning.
The governor of Eastern Province, Odette Uwamaliya, has requested members of NWC to keep the pace of transforming livelihoods starting with rural women that should access services like every Rwandan elsewhere.

She also advised them to address issues of hygiene and malnutrition.
