{People everywhere are entitled to the enjoyment of their rights every day, according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights speaking on Human Rights Day.}
The day is observed on 10 December each year to commemorate the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
The theme for this year is “Human Rights 365” to encompass the idea that rights matter each day of the year.
In his message for the day, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid R’ad Al Hussein quotes from the Declaration which says that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.
“These human rights are not country-specific. They are not a reward for good behaviour, or particular to a certain era or social group. They are the inalienable entitlements of all people, at all times and everywhere, 365 days a year.” (24″)
Mr. Al Hussein said that people of every colour, race or ethnic group are entitled to human rights whether or not they have disabilities or are citizens or migrants, no matter their sex, class, cast, creed, age or sexual orientation.
The UN human rights chief said the commitments made to the people of the world through the Universal Declaration are in themselves what he called a “mighty achievement”.
He added the Declaration defies what he described as “the tyranny, discrimination and contempt for human beings that have so painfully marked our human history”.
