{The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has provided 150 android tablets computers worth 61 million Rwanda francs, to assist the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) to collect timely accurate information and be able to assess food security situation in the country.

The android tablets will facilitate the food security-related data collection to enable the Ministry better collect a wide range of data from all corners of the country with in the shortest period of time. The tablets improve efficiency and accuracy of data collection while being more environmentally-friendly, cutting on amount of paper forms being used. In addition, using Android tablets allows real-time data processing as data collected from the field can be sent directly to the server when connected to Internet.
These tablets will assist the ministry to have clear and timely information on evolving food security situation in the country. “WFP will continue to work with relevant government institutions to improve food and nutrition security. Our efforts attempt to increase the capacity and ability of government in correctly identifying those areas and populations most food insecure and which can help design and target .assistance“ said Jean-Pierre de Margerie, WFP Country Director.
In addition to the android tablets, WFP trained various government staff and partners in accurate data collection using Android tablets, focusing on adding various settings and the questionnaire in the devices depending on the data they need to collect and convert them into human readable formats for further analysis. WFP trained trainers from various government institutions in Emergency Needs Assessment with more focus on food security and related issues.
As its commitment to enhancing national capacity to develop, design and manage nationally owned hunger solutions, WFP provides assistance to the government in food security assessments during normal and emergency periods including droughts and population mass influx.
WFP’s vision is to see Rwanda become a food secure country, achieve its vision 2020, EDPRS and the millennium development goals. In Rwanda, WFP provides food assistance to around 200,000 people including refugees in camps.
