WASAC to upgrade old water network system

In various parts of the country people lament over water shortage resulting from destroyed water pipes while others have no access to running water supply.

WASAC targets to distribute water to Kigali at 100% by the year 2017/2018. Today rural areas’ access is 83.7% compared to urban 90%.

Various partners of Water Utility Company (WASAC) have requested to mend existing water systems which are either old or completely destroyed. The request was made yesterday during a meeting that brought together WASAC staff and stakeholders to discuss how best to deliver water services to rural communities.

WASAC plans to install new water systems in the network. The WASAC CEO, James Sano said that the target of distributing water to 100% of the population cannot be attained when much of the distribution network is dilapidated. He explained that they have a plan of replacing old and destroyed pipe networks.

“We are required to set policies and build capacities to mend destroyed pipes,” he said.

The director of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), one of the development partners supporting water development systems in Eastern Province said that the repair of old water systems will be followed by training maintenance technicians for sustainability.

Statistics from WASAC indicate that 390 water systems out of the 1026 require upgrading.
