A total of 7,919 cows have so far been distributed in Burera district since Rwandan government launched Girinka Munyarwanda Program across the country, transforming hundreds of thousands of lives out of poverty.
Over the last 10 years, Rwandans living in extreme poverty have reduced from 56% to 23%, thanks to the implementation of Vision 2020 Umurenge Program (VUP) and Girinka.
Some of the Girinka beneficiaries told IGIHE how their livelihoods have been transformed.
Nyirankuriza Xaverina, a resident of Rusarabuye sector said that with the profits she earns from selling milk, she has bought land to grow crops and has freed herself from misery.
As he was handing over office, the former mayor of Burera district Samuel Sembagare said that the number of citizens living with extreme poverty was reduced from 56% to 23% over the ten years and efforts, through VUP and Girinka, will be intensified to reduce the figures further.
VUP is implemented through; direct financial support for the most vulnerable, public works for the abled and supporting job creation.
“It was not easy to attain such achievements but it was made possible through programs of VUP and Girinka Munyarwanda which improved livelihoods of Burera citizens after being introduced by President Paul Kagame,” said Sembagare.
Girinka program was initiated after the cabinet approval of 12/04/2006.
