US Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Honours victims of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi

{At Nyamata Genocide Memorial Centre, the US Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region of Africa Thomas Perriello, Ambassador Erica J. Barks-Ruggles, and Officials from Bugesera District together with genocide survivor’s representatives laid wreaths on the mass graves to honour and remember the more than a million lives lost in the Genocide against Tutsi.}

The event was a part of activities that took place on Thursday in Bugesera District during the announcement of an $87,000 grant from the U.S Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation, which will be used for training and artifact conservation at Nyamata Genocide Memorial.

Thomas Perriello is in Rwanda for a work visit.

On Wednesday he met with President Paul Kagame and discussed issues of FDLR and Burundi crisis.

Perriello was appointed US Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region early last month and he met President Kagame as part of his efforts to better understand issues in the region.
