UNMISS Hails Rwanda’s Recovery Efforts

A 19 member delegation of the United Nations mission to South Sudan has commended Rwandas progress despite the recent tragic past.

The delegation in the country to learn Rwanda’s transformation efforts, visited Kigali genocide memorial center and Isange One Stop center which offers free medical care to GBV victims.

They have been attending training on gender and peace building, and good governance.

The training was organized by Rwanda Peace Academy in collaboration with UN research and training institute and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.

It seeks to help South Sudanese be able to maintain their own security and care for victims of the war.

The delegation members were taken through the history of Rwanda and how the country has rebuilt itself and reconciling its citizens.

Among the visiting delegates was Margret Joshua who is in charge of gender at UNMISS.

She said she was deeply saddened by what she saw at the memorial which as she put it is reminiscent of what she went through.

She noted that she is happy with the Rwanda’s tremendous reconstruction efforts despite its grim past.

Benjamin Mabor a delegation member said, South Sudan is an emerging country and having been ravaged by conflict, the delegates are keen to draw lessons from Rwanda’s recovery after the 1994 genocide which had brought the country to its knees.
