Ugandans target podium in Rwanda rally

UGANDAN rally drivers have vowed to break the 9 year jinx without getting a podium finish in this year’s Rwanda Mountain Gorilla Rally that gets underway on Friday.

The Late Riyazi Kurji won the Mountain Gorilla rally in 2005 and 2006 and since then, no Ugandan competitor has managed a podium finish despite regular participation.

However, the crew of Wilbert Pole Pole and Rashid Bongole has vowed to break the jinx by getting a podium finish in this year’s edition.

Pole Pole told New Vision today, that the rally is going to help him gauge his potential before the Pearl of Africa Rally due next month. “I’m not driving my new Evo9, but I’m confident I can get a podium finish with the Subaru GC8 because it’s a reliable car,” Pole Pole Stated.

“I know there are powerful cars especially those drivers competing for the Africa Rally Championship title, but I am not scared because rallying is not all about powerful cars,” the UGAFODE Micro-finance sponsored driver added.

Pole Pole is joined by other Ugandan crews including John Consta and Aaron Nsamba (Mitsubishi Evo 9) , Desh Kananura and Moses Matovu (Subaru N14), Christakis Fitidis and Eric Nzamwita (Subaru N12), Musa Kabega and Rogers Sirwomu (Evo 8). The other drivers are Abdul Ssempebwa (Subaru N10), Edson Mungyereza and Ismail Ortega.
