Two more lionesses in Akagera National Park beget twin cubs

{Two lionesses of Akagera National Park, Umwari and Kazi have given birth to twin cubs bringing the number of lions in the park to 14.}

This follows the recent birth where of another lioness, Shema, begot 3 cubs.

The birth of twin cubs happened at the end of last week.

Ngoga Telesphore, a transfrontier conservation analyst at Rwanda Development Board (RDB) said that the cubs started appearing last week but noted that they have not yet identified the exact day of their births.

The Akagera National Park has shared via its facebook page the photographs when the cubs are with their mothers.

The births increase the number of lions in Akagera National Park to 14.

Last year in July, the government of Rwanda reintroduced seven lions which included two males and five females as part of restocking Akagera and increasing biodiversity of its ecosystem.

Following the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and the return of Rwandans who had been in exile, people were settled in the Akagera area which increased pressure on the lions as they were hunted and killed by herdsmen protecting their cattle.

Human activities in the park exerted pressure on the harmony of the jungle and culminated into the extinction of Rwanda’s lion population while others escaped the park to other surrounding areas.
