Two drug traffickers arrested in Kamonyi

The duo was arrested on Tuesday in Karama sector with bags of cannabis.

Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Bonaventure Karekezi, the Police spokesperson for the Southern region said Police in Kamonyi received information that Munyembabazi and Rukundo are drug dealers using their shop as the cover.

“Police officers raided their shop and discovered four bags of cannabis, and took the two suspects in custody,” CIP Karekezi said.

The suspects and their exhibits have since been handed over to Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).

CIP Karekezi thanked the residents for the community policing spirit to report the drug traffickers and called for continued vigilance and partnership against crimes and drug dealers in particular.

Under article 263 of the penal code, any person, who unlawfully produces, transforms, transports, stores, gives to another or who sells narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances commits an offence. Upon conviction, he/she is liable to between 20 years and life imprisonment, and a fine between Rwf15 million and Rwf30 million.
