Habumugisha was arrested on May 1 in Nyanza cell, Busasamana sector in Nyanza district with 14 and 87 fake notes of Frw5, 000 and Frw2, 000 [Frw244, 000] respectively.
Nsabimana on the other hand was arrested on May 2 in Kirehe District, Nyamugari sector after he was found in possession on 75 fake notes in Frw2, 000 denominations.
Habumugisha, who hails from Rusizi District, was identified by people in Nyanza market where he was allegedly selling the fake monies.
It is said that Habumugisha had Frw2 million, all fake and he had already spent the rest at the time he was arrested.
Nsabimana, on the other hand, was apprehended by residents as he tried to the fake monies to buy a cow and sorghum from a woman, who previously fell victim of his illegal business.
On April 19, Nsabimana allegedly bought sorghum worth Frw20, 000 from the said woman, only the latter to identify later that the money was fake.
Not knowing that the woman had discovered that the money was counterfeited, Nsabimana came back on May 2, this time to buy a cow and more sorghum. The woman spotted him and notified neighbours, who apprehended him as he tried to escape and found Frw15, 000 on him, all fake.
Chief Superintendent Hubert Gashagaza, the Southern region police spokesperson warned those involved in this act, adding that it will “backfire.”
“When we arrest them, show them to the public and explain to them the dangers behind such illegal acts. In this way, the public also get to understand the negative impact caused by such people,” he said.
“The public are our partners in crime prevention and they deserve to know the impact of their input, and such criminals should know that Rwandans are awake and won’t allow anything that affects them in anyway. They [criminals] have no place in our community,” he added.
The suspects will be charged under article 488 of the penal code which stipulates that any person who sells or exchanges national or foreign currency shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of six month to two years and a fine of Frw200, 000 to Frw 3,000, 000 or one of these penalties.
