Truck intercepted with 400kgs of cannabis in Rubavu

{Police in Rubavu District, on June 7, intercepted a truck carrying about 400 kilogrammes of cannabis.}

The Fuso registration number RAB 721W was intercepted in Gisa Cell of Rugerero along Rubavu-Kigali highway.

The driver and his co-driver, who were the only people on board at the time, were also arrested as part of the investigations on the origin, destination and all those involved in this trafficking of narcotics, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, police spokesperson for the Western region, said.

He identified the suspects as Emmanuel Nsababera, 26, and Ferdinand Sebahizi, 30.

The narcotics were at the time concealed in 12 bundles.

“Police officers were on their routine operations and when they stopped and searched the truck, they discovered bundles of sacks which they later found out that they were full of cannabis rolls weighing about 400 kilogrammes. The driver and his co-driver were immediately taken into custody and the vehicle impounded,” CIP Kanamugire said.

Preliminary investigations, he said, indicate that the narcotics were being trafficked to Kigali.

“We understand that there are some defiant people still involved in this criminal business and their accomplices in the transport sector, who try to help them to traffic the narcotics to the destined place, but they should as well be aware that such and many other tricks they use are known and through community policing, we will continue to be successful and arresting culprits,” he warned.

He particularly called upon drivers to always be vigilant not to fall prey of the tricks of wrongdoers including drug traffickers and smugglers.

Fighting drug abuse especially through community-oriented policing is among Rwanda National ‘s strategies to combat crime.
