Trio arrested with stolen motorcycle

Police in Nyaruguru District are holding three people in connection with stealing a motorcycle early this week in the City of Kigali.

Felicien Ntibategereza, Jean Claude Gatera and Desire Byiringiro were arrested on May 13 in Nteko Cell of Busanze Sector with the motorcycle TVS registration number RD 042I.

The motorcycle was stolen on May 11 in Nyamirambo, Nyarugenge District.

The Southern region police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Andre Hakizimana said: “The suspects had allegedly hired the motorcycle claiming they were going to run a few errands around Nyamirambo as a trick to steal it.”

The three men were arrested after the grandmother of one of the suspects, where they had made a stopover to spend a night in Nyaruguru called local leaders after she overheard the trio planning on how to sell it.

“The local leaders went to old woman’s home, asked the three men for the motorcycle’s log book but they deliberately refused. The local leaders immediately called the police, who came and apprehended the men, but in the course of interrogations, Byiringiro admitted that they had stolen the motorcycle and were to sell it,” CIP Hakizimana said.

“We actually established later that the rightful owner in Kigali identified as Happy Akayezu had filed a case at police, but we are currently in touch with him, he’s aware that the motorcycle was recovered and will be returned to him as we pursue theft charges against these three men.”

This is evident that community policing is bearing results and the importance of community involvement in deterrence and detection of crime is real.

“It was a brave and commendable act by this old woman to report the criminals including her grandson; it is a true spirit of a responsible citizen that everyone should learn from to detect and report anything suspicious to fight and prevent crime,” said CIP Hakizimana
