Togo Replaces Rwanda for UN Security Council Presidency

Togo’s membership at the Security Council ends on 31 December 2013

Rwanda’s contribution to the Security Council has been hailed.

The East African country of about 11million people held the Security council Presidency during the month of April.

The presidency of the Council is held by each of the members in turn for one month, following the English alphabetical order of the Member States names.

Foreign Affairs minister Louise Mushikiwabo said, “We held the presidency as one of the 15 members of the Security Council; we didn’t hold the position to change the world in one month and bring peace but most importantly we did what we could to contribute to the good cause of the world, especially in tackling violence in different places.”

Rwanda will remain a non permanent member of the Security Council until the end of 2014.

Rwanda’s Presidency at the security Council, caused a stir when it refused to Praise or endorse a statement which mentions the International Criminal Court.

June 2013- United Kingdom ({permanent Member})

July 2013- United States ({permanent Member})

August 2013- Argentina ({membership ends 31 December 2014})

September 2013- Australia ({membership ends 31 December 2014})

October 2013- Azerbaijan ({membership ends 31 December 2013})

November 2013- China ({permanent Member})

December 2013- France ({permanent Member})
