{Three people including a woman, have been arrested in two separate operations against drug trafficking in Nyamagabe District.}
In one of the operations conducted in the night of Thursday, Police arrested Jean Paul Simbarikure, 32, and Boniface Hakizimana, 56, along Rusizi-Nyamagabe highway, in possession of three-and-half sacks of cannabis.
The District Police Commander, Supt. Francois Segakwaya, said: “In the night of Thursday at about midnight, we erected a checkpoint in Kitabi Sector in Kagano Cell. We were checking all vehicles along that route of Rusizi-Nyamagabe, as part of our route operations against crimes,” Supt. Segakwaya said.
“It is during these checks that one of the vehicles – a Toyota carina RAB 384A – with three people on board including Simbarikure and Hakizimana, was found loaded with three sacks of cannabis. However, one of their accomplices escaped as police officers were checking their vehicle, but the other two were contained as they also attempted to flee,” he added.
The vehicle was impounded and taken to Gasaka Police station where the suspects are also detained as we continue with investigations,” he said.
In another related case, police also arrested a woman identified as Berthe Dusabimana, with 4.5kilogrammes of cannabis.
The DPC said that although cannabis was not a big issue in Nyamagabe, they have in the last one month seen a slight increase among those arrested over the crime.
“We were encountering majority cases of people that make or sell locally made illicit brew, which are also on the decrease due to strengthened operations and awareness, but in the last one month, the number of people arrested while trafficking cannabis has also gone up, and right now, it is one of those issues we are giving due attention through varied approaches,” he noted.
