Three suspected drug traffickers, two of them women, were arrested on May 26 in Nyabirasi Sector of Rutsiro District after they were found trafficking narcotic drugs.
Merci Manishimwe, Vestine Dusabimana and Florence Uzamuhoza were artested in a police operation.
At the time of their arrest, the trio was found in possession of 2050 pellets of cannabis.
The Western region police spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire said: “We received information from someone about three people, who were trafficking cannabis from Rubavu and the suspects were trailed and apprehended red-handed.”
“We have arrested a number of people recently based on credible information the public give us. The public are playing a vital role in this fight,” he added.
“Community Policing Committees, youth volunteers, the business community, opinion and local leaders are all playing a great part in crime detection, reporting and prevention,” he noted.
Police embarked on public sensitization that focuses most on encouraging members of the public to report anyone they suspect of involving in unlawful activities.
He seized the opportunity to call on those involved to refrain from such illegal trades saying that by all means the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with them.
Growing, selling, transformation, transportation, storage and consumption of narcotic drugs are prohibited under article 593 and punishable under article 594, with a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of Rwf500,000 to Rwf5 million.
