Three people from Mwezi of Karengera sector, Nyamasheke district, have been arrested over alleged theft and throwing the national flag in a toilet.
The stolen flag was grabbed from Nyantunda Primary School in Mwezi cell.
The executive secretary of Karengera sector, Mutuyimana Gabriel has told IGIHE that the flag was stolen in the night of Wednesday 21st April 2016.
He said the guard of Nyantuda Primary School informed officials around 8:00 pm about the theft. At the time of its removal, he had gone for a meal.
Mutuyimana said that they searched for the flag in collaboration with security personnel.“We started searching for the flag with the security personnel as soon as we were informed about the theft. We found nothing but citizens advised us later to search in toilets recalling the past situation, five years ago, where thieves stole a national flag and hid it in toilet. We did it and found the flag in a toilet,” he said.
Mutuyimana said that three suspects who had conflicts with the guard of the school where the flag was stolen have been held.
“Three people have been arrested as the investigations continue. They had conflicts with the guard and had told him that they would surprise him with a jail term,” he said.
Local leaders in Karengera sector have held a security meeting in which they emphasized strengthening patrols and appointing more than one guard in places where the country’s emblem and flag are raised.
