Three arrested in crackdown on theft of electronics

Three people have been arrested in Kigali in connection with theft of electronics.

Police identified the suspects as Simon Niyomugabo, Augustin Ruzindana and Olivier Ndababonye, who were arrested on June 23.

Police also recovered assortment of electronic from the trio, which had been stolen from various individuals in Kigali.

Those recovered include a computer laptop, a smart phone and other belongings stolen from a British pastor, Simon Yung on June 20 in Remera, Gasabo District.

It is said that the robbery against the British pastor was staged when one suspects, Niyomugabo, a disabled, tricked him to hold him (Niyomugabo) up from the ground as his accomplices snatched the backpack where he had kept all the belongings.

Yung, who received his recovered items, yesterday, narrated that he immediately filed a complaint to police.

“I am very thankful for what Rwanda police has done; this is clear proof of how professional they are and I can only ask God to bless this country,” Yung said, upon receiving his items.

According to the Central Region Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Felly Rutagerura Bahizi, who handed over some of the recovered items to owners, said that when Yung filed the case, investigations were started which led to the arrest of Niyomugabo.

“We recovered the laptop from Rubavu where Niyomugabo had sold it and found other items in Niyomugabo’s house,” said ACP Bahizi

The suspects risk a jail sentence of up to two years as per article 300 of the penal code.
